Background of the Study

Enterprise systems are critical tools for managing business operations and integrating various departments within an organization. Traditionally, businesses relied on on-premise enterprise systems, where all hardware and software were hosted internally within the organization's premises (Michell, 2024). However, the increasing demand for flexibility, scalability, and cost-efficiency has driven many businesses to adopt cloud-based enterprise systems, where resources are hosted remotely and accessed over the internet.

In Gombe State, businesses are at different stages of adopting cloud-based systems. While larger enterprises have shifted to the cloud, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) still rely on traditional on-premise systems due to concerns about cost, security, and lack of technical expertise. This study compares the performance of on-premise versus cloud-based enterprise systems in Gombe State, focusing on factors such as cost, scalability, security, and system performance.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing trend towards cloud adoption, many businesses in Gombe State remain hesitant to transition from on-premise systems due to concerns regarding data security, internet reliability, and long-term costs. This study aims to evaluate the relative benefits and challenges of both on-premise and cloud-based enterprise systems, assessing which option better meets the needs of businesses in Gombe State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To compare the effectiveness of on-premise and cloud-based enterprise systems in Gombe State.
  2. To identify the challenges businesses face when adopting on-premise or cloud-based systems.
  3. To recommend strategies for optimizing enterprise system implementation for businesses in Gombe State.

Research Questions

  1. How do on-premise and cloud-based enterprise systems compare in terms of cost, scalability, security, and system performance for businesses in Gombe State?
  2. What are the key challenges businesses face when adopting on-premise or cloud-based systems?
  3. What strategies can businesses in Gombe State implement to optimize their enterprise systems?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant difference in cost, scalability, security, and system performance between on-premise and cloud-based enterprise systems in Gombe State.
  2. Challenges such as cost, technical expertise, and security do not significantly affect the adoption of cloud-based or on-premise enterprise systems.
  3. Strategies to optimize enterprise system implementation do not significantly improve business performance for businesses in Gombe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on businesses in Gombe State, comparing the effectiveness of on-premise and cloud-based enterprise systems in 2023–2025. Limitations include the variability in business size and industry, which may affect the generalizability of the findings.

Definitions of Terms
